Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about the Splayometer.

About the Device

What is the Splayometer?

The Splayometer is a clinical dynamometer purpose-built to measure finger and hand extension and abduction force. It fills a long-standing gap in hand assessment — no commercial instrument previously existed for quantifying the force generated when fingers extend, spread, or open against resistance.

How is it different from a grip dynamometer?

Grip dynamometers and pinch gauges measure adductive and compressive force — squeezing and pinching. The Splayometer measures the opposite: the force generated when fingers push apart or extend outward. These are distinct muscle groups with no prior equivalent measurement tool.

What measurements can it take?

The Splayometer measures thumb-finger extension (one ring on a target digit, one on the thumb), inter-finger spreading (adjacent fingers spreading apart), and whole-hand extension and abduction using the hand loop. Results display as peak force in pounds or kilograms.

Clinical Use

Who is it designed for?

Therapists, hand specialists, and other clinicians who perform hand strength assessment as part of clinical evaluation, surgical planning, or rehabilitation — including occupational therapists, physical therapists, hand surgeons, physiatrists, and orthopedic specialists.

What conditions is it useful for?

Any context requiring objective hand strength data — post-stroke recovery, rheumatoid arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral nerve injury, post-surgical rehabilitation, and general hand injury assessment.

How does a typical measurement session work?

Select the attachment for the digit pair being tested, position the patient's finger(s) in the rings or loop, and have the patient perform the movement at maximum voluntary effort. The device displays peak force. Repeat three trials and record the average. A full session typically takes only a few minutes.

Attachments

What attachments are included?

Pliable finger rings sized for each digit (index through pinky and thumb), a hand loop, and a twist-lock quick-release mechanism. All attachments connect and disconnect with a simple 90-degree turn.

Can I switch attachments mid-session?

Yes — the twist-lock quick-release allows rapid changeover without tools, so clinicians can test multiple digit pairs in sequence without interrupting workflow.
